Disease ecology of Leptospirosis in Hawaii

Under the supervision of Arielle Crews and Dr. Amber Wright at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, I am assessing mongooses (herpestes javanicus), rats (rattus rattus, rattus exulans, rattus norvegicus) and mice (mus musculus) for the prevalence of Leptospirosis. The project involved trapping, fluid sampling of animals, water and soil and laboratorial work. More details are provided under the Animal Related Work section of this page.




Effects of Dog’s Socialization on Behavior and Adoption in Haven Humane Society: A Case Study

This project uses a method to code an individual dog’s behavior through already existing socialization notes made by volunteers in an animal shelter. The coded behavior is in turn used to observe associations between a dog’s socialization and behavior through the dog’s shelter lifetime in the kennel. The work was presented at the 7th Annual Simpson Symposium in 2017, and won the Best Paper Award. You can access it here.



Red-Eared Slider Turtle Invasion at the Sundial Bridge's Turtle Pond

I studied a Red-eared Slider Turtle population in order to verify its effect on the populations of the natural Western Pond Turtle species currently living in Redding, California. The collected data was later accepted by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife's database on invasive species for a new population sighting. The work was also presented as a poster at the 6th Annual Simpson Symposium in 2016.



Response to Growth Factors in Mouse Fibroblast

We used multiple science methods (Cell Stimulation, Western Blot, Gel Electrophoresis, etc) to test for growth responses in mouse fibroblast cells when exposed to Fetal Bovine Serum. The work was published and presented at the 5th Annual Simpson Symposium in 2015, and won the Best Paper Award.



Animal Related Work




  • Department of Biology - University of Hawaii at Manoa, June 2017 - August 2017 - Casual Hire.
    Field Work: Set traps, assessed general characteristics (weight, gender, age range, lengths of various body parts), administrated general anesthetics through inhalation, collected blood, urine and fecal samples, inspected for ectoparasites and tagged ears before releasing the animals to the wild. Filtered water samples, and soil samples were also collected to assess Leptospirosis.
    Lab Work: Entered data, stored samples in appropriate fridge/freezer,and sterialized equipment.

  • Country Aire Pet Resort, May 2016 - July 2016 - Kennel Technician.
    Cleaned kennels, exercised dogs, fed dogs/cats, medicated dogs/cats, cleaned facilities, maintained cleanliness standards of the company, socialized dogs, worked with customers to make a smooth transition of checking pets in.

Volunteer Work




  • Haven Humane Society, Feb. 2015 - Present
    Kennel: Walk dogs, watch for signs of sickness, train dogs to walk on leash properly, and perform tricks in an animal shelter.
    Clinical Experience: Wash used surgery utensils/laundry, draw vaccines, open and stock needles/other various items, clean cages, occasionally restraining/ weighing an animal, observing vet. procedures.

  • PARADIS, Kathryn A. Literature Review-IgE Protein, Senior Class: Immunology.
    Selected a single protein, and wrote a literature review concerning the structure, function, and focus on an aspect of the protein.

  • PARADIS, Kathryn A. Grant Proposal, Senior Class: Seminars.
    Proposed a study on the association between sociability of a shelter dog, and its behavior. A code scheme based on Ground Theory on Socialization notes, correlation analysis, and experiment study were proposed. A case study of the grant was later published (See Publications).
